Our mission
Let's face it, with paraffin candles dominating the industry, a lot of candles aren't sustainable or eco-friendly, it's the unfortunate truth. But why are paraffin candles bad? The answer is simple really, paraffin wax is made from crude oil, the same stuff that makes plastic, gasoline, and more. When you burn paraffin wax it releases harmful chemicals (ex. carcinogenic benzene and toluene) that have been linked to causing lung cancer and asthma.
What are we doing about it?
For starters we've vowed never to use paraffin wax, instead we use beeswax wax sourced from a small business. How is beeswax any better though? Beeswax is a natural byproduct from the beekeeping industry, making it a very sustainable option. When honey is ready to be collected, the beekeepers remove the wax caps of the honey comb cells, so instead of it going to waste we use it! Beeswax is also a much denser wax than paraffin, meaning you'll have a longer burn time, allowing you to enjoy your candle longer! And, on top of that, as it burns negative ions are produced, then these ions act as a natural air purifier.
But that's not all we're doing to be more sustainable!
Recycled Glass
This year we're moving towards only using glass jars that are made from recycled glass, also known as cullet. Cullet, compared to the raw materials used to make new glass, has a much lower melting point, meaning you need less fuel to make it. The pollution from making cullet, compared to making glass from raw materials, is also significantly lower, with related air pollution being cut down by 20% and related water pollution by 50%. Plus, by recycling glass you're saving it from the landfill where it wouldn't break down!
Compostable Candle Labels
We use compostable ‘eco-plastic' labels made from wood-pulp. Currently the backing is paper lined with silicone unfortunately, but the manufacturer is currently working with suppliers of seaweed coatings to produce their own and replace the silicone for an all around eco-friendly label!
Reusing Jars
Additionally we're working on producing "Jar Inserts"! What are "Jar Inserts"? This is a product that will allow you to reuse your jar, either for another candle or to grow a plant! With the wax insert you can just pop the insert into the jar and you're good to enjoy your new candle! And with the Plant Insert you'll receive a dirt cube and some seeds that you can grow in your jar! This way if you don't have a glass recycling plant near you, you can still repurpose the jar in some way instead of tossing it out.
Boxes
We use use cardboard boxes that can easily be composted or recycled.
Bubble Wrap
Currently the bubble wrap we used is made from 90% recycled plastics, however once we've used up the last of this we will be shifting to using paper bubble wrap. But until then if you order from us please recycle the plastic bubble wrap at your local collection bin!
Cling Wrap:
We currently wrap our wax melts in 100% compostable cling wrap that's BPA and plastic free, and contains no polyethylene. Some of our wax melts from earlier batches that we still have left over are wrapped in biodegradable wax paper.
Packing Tape
We use water activated gummed craft tape.
Shipping Labels
We use Direct Thermal Shipping Labels featuring a release liner that is made of 100% recycled content and is curbside recyclable with a recycle-friendly, high-performance adhesive.
